With all the zombie-theme running events happening around the world, why not in Manila, thus, Outbreak Manila.
A 5km obstacle-run with bloody zombies, I believe this was the first zombie-run organized in the country and I got to experience it before it trends. I had so much fun even though I was a lone wolf, some runners are in group and some are wearing costumes.
Runners’ objective was to keep at least one ribbon when crossing the finish line. Zombies’ objective was to pull them off from the runners waist. The most fun part was when you get to some spots where you have to outsmart the zombies around you, act like a zombie, dip your ribbons in a blood container (not actual blood) so they won’t smell your brain, run in maze where you don’t have an idea what’s waiting for you outside of it. There were also obstacles that requires group effort, and the most challenging part was when you have to cross a block full of zombies and this was right after the starting line, you can zig-zag your way out, do ninja moves, kung-fu your way out, use human shield or whatever.
You’re safe once you’ve crossed the block entering the grass fields, I slipped and scratched my left hand because that one zombie wasn’t walking or running, it’s sprinting towards my direction and I had to run super fast and by the time I reached the end of the block and I can’t control my speed, I stepped into slippery sand and fell, Man, that scared me! Good thing there were first-aid teams around the course.
So, after an hour running I was able to keep one ribbon out of three. I got the shirt, the medal, some freebies and all the bragging rights. I’ve survived the apocalypse!
